When Argentine cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavado, known as Quino, passed away in 2020 at age 88, he left behind a timeless character: Mafalda, a young girl who challenges authority, detests soup, and has become a beloved figure worldwide.

Mafalda, the central figure of Quino’s acclaimed comic strip, has achieved international fame with statues erected in Argentina and Spain, various animated adaptations—including an upcoming Netflix series—and merchandise featuring her distinctive bob haircut and bow tie found from Mexico City to Milan.

Despite her widespread popularity abroad, Mafalda remains relatively unknown in the United States, with limited English translations and scarce comic distribution. That is about to change with the release of a five-volume English collection by Elsewhere Editions, beginning June 10. This edition promises to offer fresh insight for readers navigating today’s polarized political climate.

Ricardo Siri, an artist who grew up enjoying Mafalda in Argentina and now resides in Vermont, describes the comic as “exactly what the country needs right now.” He highlights Mafalda’s unique perspective and her ability to embrace friendships with those very different from herself.

To new American audiences, Mafalda may remind some of the classic comic character Nancy by Ernie Bushmiller, but her personality and adventures are entirely original. Whether she’s blasting off on a seltzer-powered jetpack or expressing her candid opinions, Mafalda embodies an inquisitive spirit that, while unlikely to bridge political divides, offers a hopeful example for how future generations might approach the world.
