Maggie Rogers Reflects on the Realities of Post-College Life and Dreams

This piece draws from a commencement speech delivered to graduates of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

The year following college graduation can be disorienting and difficult. Reflecting back, I consider what advice I would give to my younger self from nearly a decade ago.

I would remind her of the basics: stay hydrated and always protect your skin from the sun.

I would emphasize that rest is essential and an integral part of the journey.

I would stress the importance of friendships, which are more vital to one’s career than I initially realized. At the time, I was eager to explore new experiences and meet new people, but that advice proved true.

Much of my college experience was about discovering my most authentic self, a process I shared closely with friends.

Among my circle were a friend who was a photographer, another who made films, one involved in drug dealing, and another working as a bouncer at Webster Hall. We were determined to capture every moment, to document our lives, and to create art that could leave a lasting impact.
