Ryan Coogler’s latest film, ‘Sinners,’ is expected to generate at least $330 million in global ticket sales for Warner Bros. by the end of its theatrical run, according to several box office experts. This performance would place the movie among the elite in Hollywood’s horror genre.
Achieving this level of revenue puts ‘Sinners’ on par with Jordan Peele’s acclaimed ‘Get Out,’ which earned $256 million worldwide in 2017, or approximately $337 million when accounting for inflation. Among original horror films, ‘Sinners’ would rank as the top earner since 2018’s ‘A Quiet Place,’ directed by John Krasinski, which brought in an inflation-adjusted $440 million.
When compared to franchise-originating horror movies, ‘Sinners’ is set to outperform the original 1978 ‘Halloween’ by John Carpenter, which grossed $47 million at the time—roughly $241 million adjusted for inflation. The film’s haul would be comparable to Wes Craven’s debut ‘Scream’ ($358 million) and notably surpass the earnings of James Wan’s ‘Saw’ ($180 million) and Oren Peli’s ‘Paranormal Activity’ ($293 million).
Coogler envisioned ‘Sinners’—a bold vampire fantasy set in the 1930s American South—as a standalone story. He expressed his desire for the film to offer a complete experience, saying he wanted it to serve as a full meal with appetizers, starters, main courses, and desserts, ensuring the narrative felt holistic and self-contained.
Nonetheless, the success of ‘Sinners’ leaves open the possibility for it to develop into a franchise if Coogler chooses to expand its universe, potentially granting him significant influence within the industry and at Warner Bros.
Industry observers note the film’s strong connection with audiences, highlighting its ability to encourage repeat viewings and broaden its fan base. David A. Gross, a film consultant specializing in box office analysis, remarked that the movie’s deep resonance with viewers has been a key factor in its ongoing success.
