Liverpool was filled with joy as fans celebrated their soccer team’s Premier League victory. Paul O’Brien and his family had traveled from Ireland to join the festivities. “Everyone was singing all day, enjoying themselves and connecting with one another,” recalled O’Brien.
But the atmosphere abruptly shifted.
While standing on Water Street in the city center, O’Brien and his family were suddenly pushed by a rushing crowd. A dark-colored car unexpectedly sped through the densely packed street. O’Brien believes that the crowd's quick reaction saved them from being struck by the vehicle.
“We didn’t realize what was happening until we were pushed aside,” he said. “Then we saw people lying on the pavement. The courage of those who pushed kids and others out of harm’s way was remarkable.”
The joyous celebration turned tragic around 6 p.m. when a 53-year-old British man drove his car into the crowd, injuring nearly 50 individuals. Twenty-seven victims were hospitalized, with two—including a child—sustaining serious injuries. Fire officials reported rescuing four people trapped beneath the vehicle.
This sudden and violent event sent shockwaves through Liverpool, a city known for its strong working-class roots along England’s northwest coast.
