Healthcare access for transgender youth is a deeply personal issue affecting thousands of families across the United States. At the same time, it has become one of the most contentious cultural and political debates today. Currently, 27 states have enacted bans on surgeries, hormone therapies, or puberty blockers for minors. The Supreme Court is expected to soon rule on the constitutionality of these restrictions.
A newly released six-part podcast series titled “The Protocol” explores the historical development of these treatments alongside the ongoing, often divisive conversation. The series is the result of two years of investigative work by a reporter specializing in the intersection of gender and science and an experienced senior audio producer. The project aims to provide in-depth perspectives and challenge prevailing assumptions through extended interviews and storytelling.
This audio series differs from previous reporting by offering lengthy, intimate conversations that allow listeners to connect more deeply with the subjects. Such an approach fosters greater understanding and can help dismantle preconceived notions.
A central question driving the series is how the current state of transgender youth healthcare came to be. While science and politics are tightly intertwined in this debate, the reporting underscores that political influences have been embedded in the issue from the beginning.
The podcast’s title, “The Protocol,” references the Dutch Protocol, which originated from pioneering gender-affirming treatments developed in the Netherlands during the 1990s and early 2000s. The series begins there to provide crucial historical context for understanding the evolution of care and controversy.
