European Leaders Unite in Historic Visit to Kyiv Amid Cease-Fire Calls
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron meet in Paris ahead of the Kyiv visit.

On Saturday, the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, and Poland are set to conduct their inaugural joint visit to Kyiv, aiming to emphasize their unwavering support for Ukraine and strengthen demands for Russia to consent to a 30-day cease-fire.

This coordinated trip, symbolizing European solidarity, will see French President Emmanuel Macron, newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British and Polish Prime Ministers Keir Starmer and Donald Tusk engage in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

For Chancellor Merz, this marks his first official visit to Ukraine, and it represents the first occasion that four European leaders have traveled together to Ukrainian territory.

The timing coincides with Russia hosting leaders from China, Brazil, and other nations in Moscow to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat, highlighted by a military parade intended to showcase Russia's role in a shifting global order outside Western influence.

Prior to the visit, the four European governments expressed their backing of a 30-day cease-fire initiative initially proposed in March by former U.S. President Donald Trump. While Ukraine has accepted the cease-fire proposal, Russia has insisted on negotiating the terms of any agreement before committing to a halt in hostilities.

In a joint statement released late Friday, the quartet reaffirmed their support for the peace proposal and urged Russia to cease obstructing efforts to achieve lasting peace. They called on Russia to agree to a full and unconditional 30-day cease-fire to allow space for negotiations toward a just and enduring resolution.
