The Israeli community was left shaken on Thursday following the fatal shooting of two embassy staff members in Washington, D.C. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the incident as a "horrific antisemitic murder."

The attack occurred as the victims were departing an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Capital Jewish Museum. Authorities apprehended a suspect at the scene, who reportedly shouted "Free, free Palestine" upon arrest.

Israeli Foreign Ministry officials identified the deceased as Sarah Lynn Milgrim, responsible for coordinating missions and visits to Israel, and Yaron Lischinsky, a political research analyst. Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, revealed that the couple was engaged to be married.

David Schiff, a university friend of Lischinsky, remembered him as "an exceptionally gifted individual and, above all, a genuinely kind person."

Schiff, 31, added, "Yaron was passionate about diplomacy and thrilled to be working at the embassy in Washington, D.C. He loved the city. This tragedy is utterly devastating."

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar attributed the attack to the surge in "poisonous antisemitic rhetoric targeting Israel and Jews worldwide" that has intensified since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023.
