In a significant departure from longstanding U.S. policy, President Trump convened an unprecedented meeting on Wednesday with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara, who previously led a rebel faction once classified as a terrorist organization by the United States.

The encounter took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, following the encouragement of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and came just one day after President Trump announced the removal of comprehensive sanctions against Syria that had been in place since 1979.

Known for his candid assessments, the president remarked favorably on al-Shara's appearance and demeanor, describing the Syrian leader as a 'young, attractive guy' with a 'tough' and 'very strong' background as a fighter.

President Trump expressed optimism about Syria's future under al-Shara’s leadership, acknowledging the country's extensive struggles by calling it a 'torn-up country' but believing he 'has a real shot at pulling it together.'

This meeting marked the first direct engagement between the heads of the two nations in 25 years, underscoring a notable shift in diplomatic relations.

Following the meeting, President Trump traveled to Qatar, the second destination on his four-day Middle East tour. His arrival was met with grand honors, including a camel-mounted guard for his motorcade, reflecting the region’s elaborate welcome.
