When South by Southwest originated in Austin, Texas, back in 1987, Shoreditch in East London was still largely industrial, dotted with vacant warehouses. Over time, however, it evolved into a thriving hub renowned for its dynamic music and cultural scene.
Nearly four decades later, Shoreditch serves as the backdrop for South by Southwest’s inaugural European event. For many local musicians participating, this represents a significant platform that highlights the area’s artistic reputation and creative vitality.
Joel Bailey, an R&B and soul artist from Southwest London who performs as BAELY, expressed enthusiasm about the festival’s arrival on home turf. He emphasized the city’s diverse creative enclaves, naming Shoreditch as a particularly vibrant and flourishing center.
London-born performer Jojo Orme, known as Heartworms, shared her perspective on Shoreditch’s cultural pulse, describing it as an ever-beating heart of creativity. She noted the neighborhood’s popularity as a destination for live shows, where audiences can always expect an engaging experience.
The South by Southwest London festival, kicking off on Monday and running through June 7, will feature more than 500 artists performing across approximately 30 venues. Alongside the music showcases, the event will include film screenings and conference sessions, mirroring the format of the original Austin festival. This follows the launch of an Asia-Pacific edition in Sydney last year.
