The New York Times Company has finalized a licensing agreement with Amazon, permitting the tech company to utilize its editorial content within Amazon’s artificial intelligence platforms.
According to the announcement, this partnership will make The Times’ editorial materials available across a range of Amazon’s customer-facing experiences. The deal includes content not only from news articles but also from NYT Cooking, the publication’s culinary website, and The Athletic, a sports-focused platform.
This marks the first time The Times has consented to a licensing deal centered specifically on generative AI applications.
In 2023, The Times initiated legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright violations by claiming these companies used millions of its articles to train automated chatbots without compensation. Both OpenAI and Microsoft have denied these allegations.
The financial details of the arrangement with Amazon have not been made public.
Meredith Kopit Levien, CEO of The Times, emphasized that the agreement aligns with the company’s principle that quality journalism deserves fair remuneration. She stated that the deal reflects their ongoing commitment to ensuring their work is appropriately valued, whether through commercial partnerships or protecting intellectual property rights.
Amazon plans to incorporate The Times’ editorial content into its Alexa voice assistant and use the material to train its proprietary AI models.
