The Tony Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday night. If you’re unfamiliar with this theater season or Broadway in general, here are some important details to keep in mind.
Understanding the Tony Awards
Presented annually by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, the Tony Awards recognize outstanding plays and musicals produced on Broadway. Broadway refers to 41 theaters located in and around Times Square, each seating at least 500 spectators. The awards cover 26 competitive categories alongside several honorary distinctions, such as lifetime achievement.
This year’s main event takes place on Sunday, June 8, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. It will be broadcast on CBS and available for streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime. The ceremony will be hosted by Cynthia Erivo at Radio City Music Hall.
Prior to the main show, many of the creative team awards will be presented during a preshow starting at 6:40 p.m., streaming on Pluto TV and hosted by Darren Criss and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
Expect special highlights including a 10th anniversary performance of 'Hamilton' among the evening’s celebrations.
Current State of Broadway
Broadway’s recent season presents a varied outlook. The 2024-25 season concluded as the highest-grossing in history, surpassing the pre-pandemic record set in 2018-19, though these figures are not adjusted for inflation.
