On Wednesday, congressional leaders remained at an impasse over government spending, prolonging the shutdown as neither Republicans nor Democrats showed signs of compromise.
Following consecutive Senate votes on Tuesday night that rejected each party’s proposed stopgap funding measures, Republican leaders initiated another round of votes Wednesday morning, yielding the same unsuccessful results.
The Republican proposal, which sought to extend government funding through November 21, failed to reach the 60-vote threshold, falling short with a 55-45 vote.
Meanwhile, the Democratic plan, which combined a short-term funding extension with provisions to renew expiring healthcare subsidies and reverse Medicaid reductions enacted during the summer as part of a major tax and domestic policy initiative, was defeated 47-53.
The repetitive nature of the voting outcomes underscored the entrenched positions held by both parties, with no senators altering their stance from the previous night.
