The 78th edition of the Tony Awards is underway, with several categories showing tight competition.
Leading the nominations are musicals like "Buena Vista Social Club," "Death Becomes Her," and "Maybe Happy Ending," each securing 10 nods. Trailing closely with seven nominations each are "Dead Outlaw," "John Proctor Is the Villain," "Sunset Boulevard," and "The Hills of California."
Hosted by Cynthia Erivo, the ceremony begins at 8 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall and will be broadcast on CBS, with streaming available via Paramount+. Prior to the main event, a preshow ceremony at 6:40 p.m., hosted by Renée Elise Goldsberry and Darren Criss—who is also nominated for best actor in a musical—will announce several awards. This early ceremony can be streamed for free on Pluto TV.
Theater and film enthusiasts are anticipating whether acclaimed actors such as George Clooney ("Good Night, and Good Luck"), Sarah Snook ("The Picture of Dorian Gray"), and Bob Odenkirk ("Glengarry Glen Ross") will claim victories. Jonathan Groff is a strong contender to win best actor in a musical for the second consecutive year, while Audra McDonald, Broadway’s most awarded performer, aims to secure her seventh Tony.
The evening promises vibrant performances from productions including "Gypsy," "Operation Mincemeat," "Sunset Boulevard," and "Buena Vista Social Club," along with a live performance from "Hamilton."
