Maggie Harrison, the 52-year-old winemaker behind Antica Terra, has established herself as a premier producer of chardonnay and pinot noir in Oregon’s Willamette Valley since launching her label in 2005. After operating from a modest warehouse in Dundee for nearly two decades, she recently relocated to a sprawling 148-acre estate near Amity, about an hour south of Portland. Together with a creative team, including architect Jai Kumaran of West of West, Harrison has been transforming the property into her vision of an exceptional winery. Their initial collaboration debuted last year with a candlelit tasting room and kitchen, distinguished by a striking oculus. The latest addition is the “Table in the Trees,” a unique outdoor dining venue centered around a winding 200-foot-long table made from concrete and reclaimed stone, nestled in a hilltop forest.
In late July, Harrison inaugurated the space with a gathering of artists and collaborators to coincide with the opening of Antica Terra’s Art Meadow, featuring naturalistic stone fountains created by Los Angeles ceramist Lily Clark. Harrison, dressed in a flowing white caftan, described her role humorously as more akin to leading a coven than a cult, emphasizing the magical and communal spirit of the event. Guests enjoyed a seasonal menu paired with Antica Terra’s wines beneath towering white oaks, creating an intimate and enchanting atmosphere.
The event brought together key members of the Antica Terra team, including head chef Timothy Wastell, chef de cuisine Ramon Kelly-Canarios, and studio manager Rachel Foster. They were joined by artist Lily Clark, architect Jai Kumaran, and Benjamin Critton and Heidi Korsavong, curators of Clark’s exhibition from the Marta gallery in Los Angeles. Also present were Portland-based woodworking artist Nicolas Musso, felted-wool artist Kristina Foley from the Willamette Valley, and landscape designers Kara Holekamp and Story Wiggins of Terremoto, with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
