On Tuesday, the usually composed London fashion community showed visible excitement as Catherine, Princess of Wales, made a surprise appearance to present the Queen Elizabeth II Award for Design to Patrick McDowell, a 29-year-old designer from Liverpool.
Catherine appeared in an olive suit by Victoria Beckham paired with a white silk pussy-bow blouse as she accompanied McDowell through displays of his creations among mannequins and models inside 180 the Strand, a notable venue in Central London. This marked her second time presenting the award, which was established in 2018 by the British Fashion Council and the royal family to honor London’s influential fashion industry and its contributions to society and diplomacy.
Though the princess did not address the audience publicly, McDowell revealed that their private discussion covered shared values such as a dedication to craftsmanship and his commitment to producing collections in Britain while offering clients options to repair or alter their garments.
During her tour of the showcased pieces, Catherine showed particular interest in a tailored sleeveless jacket named the “Wales jacket.”
Recalling the moment, McDowell said, "She asked with a big smile, ‘Why would you name it that?’ It was a special moment, sharing lighthearted conversation with someone who will one day be queen."
