For the second consecutive year, New York-based curator and writer Lumi Tan is leading the Focus section at Frieze New York, crafting a rich and collaborative narrative spotlighting emerging artists and galleries.
At 43, Tan described her selection process as intuitive and personal.
“I aim to showcase a broad spectrum of international perspectives and materials that will captivate visitors, while also considering the significance of the presentation for the artist’s current context in New York,” she said.
Tan serves as editor in residence for the New York arts organization Topical Cream. Her recent roles include curatorial director for Luna Luna, the revival of the world’s first art amusement park originally created in 1987, which was exhibited last year in Los Angeles. She is also slated to curate the 2026 Converge 45 citywide exhibition in Portland, Oregon.
From over 100 submissions, Tan and the Frieze committee selected 12 young galleries, each operating between one and twelve years. Each gallery will present a solo exhibition by an emerging or underrecognized artist, with particular attention to diversity and inclusion. Seven galleries will appear for the first time, while five are returning exhibitors, some nearing the end of their eligibility.
Tan emphasized her curatorial goal is to strike a balance: “I want to create an experience that feels fresh and unconventional for attendees, while also highlighting the strengths of both the galleries and their artists through more traditional displays.”
