In his new Netflix comedy special, "The Good Life," Mike Birbiglia recounts a heated political argument with his father from roughly two decades ago. The exchange ended on a bitter note, with his father refusing to say goodbye as Birbiglia left.
As Birbiglia walked to his car, he said, "Bye, Dad."
His father responded, "Well, you’ve gone another way."
At that moment, Birbiglia reflects in the special, "My whole life I wanted to be my dad, and at some point, I wished he could be me."
However, in the heat of the moment, his thoughts were different: "What is he thinking? He’s just wrong."
About a year ago, Birbiglia’s father suffered a severe stroke that left him hospitalized for months. Now back home with care, he is unable to stand or walk, can speak, but does not recall events from the past year.
This profound change has deeply affected the family. Birbiglia describes his father as a larger-than-life personality who could sometimes be volatile during his childhood. In the special, he jokes that despite the tragedy, "if I’m honest, the stroke has calmed him down."
One evening, after delivering this dark humor, the audience was unsure how to react. Sensing their hesitation, Birbiglia improvised, saying, "Most of tonight’s jokes are for you, but some are for me. This is how I cope. And I hope it helps you too." This candid moment resonated, lighting up the room with a shared understanding of his personal struggle.
