Nestled in a side street within the vibrant Yaksu-dong district, Frieze House Seoul emerges as a distinctive cultural landmark amidst the predominantly conventional office buildings and residential towers.
Characterized by its flowing facades, rounded roof shingles, and carefully maintained bonsai trees on its lawn, this venue is set to serve as a permanent exhibition space coinciding with Frieze Seoul, the ongoing art fair through September 6. Its design and concept draw inspiration from Frieze London’s No. 9 Cork Street gallery, established in 2021, which hosts temporary exhibitions, artist residencies, and a variety of art events year-round.
The inauguration of Frieze House Seoul occurs during the fourth edition of Frieze Seoul, an event whose growing popularity highlights South Korea’s rising prominence in the global art landscape. Patrick Lee, the fair’s director, envisions replicating the success of its London counterpart.
He explained, “The primary mission is to create a space where creators—from galleries and architects to filmmakers and fashion designers—can connect with audiences beyond the limited timeframe of the fair.”
During a recent visit, landscapers worked under a hot sun to complete the outdoor garden, while inside, the exhibition areas received final touches. Natural light poured through a skylight above a striking four-level staircase, the architectural centerpiece of the split-level house. Inside, crisp white gallery walls contrasted with dark wooden accents and curved glass block windows lining the stairwell.
