Inside the 2025 Tony Awards: What Audiences Can Anticipate
The CBS broadcast of the Tony Awards brings Broadway’s newest productions into the homes of millions.

Robotic performers, rivalries involving the undead, a deceased bank robber, and a cave explorer nearing the end of their journey. Alongside these are clumsy spies, hapless pirates, and the ever-popular “Hamilton.”

The 2025 Tony Awards are set for Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern, taking place at Radio City Music Hall and airing on CBS.

As Broadway’s most significant annual event, the ceremony introduces the newest plays and musicals to a television audience numbering in the millions—many of whom may become future theater enthusiasts, ticket purchasers, or even performers themselves.

This year’s awards show will be hosted by Cynthia Erivo, a 38-year-old British actress recognized for her Tony-winning breakout role in the 2016 revival of “The Color Purple.”

Since then, Erivo has expanded her career into film, television, and music. She stars as Elphaba in the upcoming “Wicked” film adaptations, portrayed Harriet Tubman in the movie “Harriet,” and embodied Aretha Franklin in the National Geographic series “Genius: Aretha.”

Following the Tony Awards, Erivo will return to the stage, playing Jesus in a limited August run of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Early next year, she is slated to headline a one-woman production of “Dracula” in London’s West End.
