Marc Maron Announces End of Groundbreaking Podcast After Over a Decade

Marc Maron recently announced that he will be ending his long-running podcast, which has been on air since 2009. Listeners have followed the comedian’s candid and often gritty interview series, 'WTF With Marc Maron,' which managed to feel innovative and boundary-pushing even years after its debut.

Maron has referred to launching the podcast as a last-ditch effort during a challenging period in his life. Following his second divorce and the loss of his radio position at the struggling Air America network, Maron was in a precarious financial and professional state. Reflecting on that time, he described feeling abandoned and barely able to make ends meet, wondering how to avoid financial ruin.

The year 2012 was also personally difficult for me. Early into a demanding new job, I discovered I was pregnant and soon became so ill that I could barely manage daily tasks. Forced to resign, I faced uncertainty about my future. It was during this time that I found solace in Maron’s podcast, listening as he navigated his own anxieties and encouraged his guests to confront theirs.

The podcast gave me hope that despite setbacks and personal struggles, a creative comeback was possible. It suggested that one could eventually revisit these experiences with pride rather than shame, even if the path forward remained unclear.

'WTF' distinguished itself through Maron’s raw vulnerability and immediacy. Episodes often opened with Maron sharing lengthy, unfiltered monologues that offered an intimate glimpse into his mind — from relationship troubles and the antics of his cherished feral cats to his creative challenges and grief over the untimely passing of director Lynn Shelton.

This openness extended to his guests, eliciting sincere and sometimes surprising revelations. Notable moments include comedian Todd Glass publicly coming out during a 2012 episode and Ali Wong expressing motherhood candidly by pumping breast milk live on air in 2016.
