Since relocating from Albany, New York to Los Angeles in 2015, Meg Duffy has established themselves as a sought-after guitarist, touring and recording with notable acts such as Perfume Genius, the War on Drugs, and Weyes Blood. Recognized for their elegant yet powerful guitar work and textured soundscapes, Duffy has also released several albums under the moniker Hand Habits, blending folk-rock with experimental chamber pop to channel personal emotions.
Towards the end of 2023, Duffy encountered a lingering, unpleasant smell in their shared Los Angeles home, a scent that hinted at a dead rodent hidden behind aged walls. Despite hearing rodents scurrying previously, the odor soon became pervasive, accompanied by an influx of mosquitoes whenever windows were opened. Clinging to a mantra tattooed on their arm from childhood — 'Everything’s cool' — Duffy tried to maintain composure.
Eventually, Duffy reached an emotional breaking point. Four years into hormone replacement therapy, a tense conversation with their brother about their transgender identity left them shaken. Their partner, a psychiatrist who prefers to remain anonymous, offered reassurance, affirming that it was okay to feel anger. Defying the annoyance of mosquitoes, she opened a window, creating a moment of safety and trust that had previously eluded Duffy.
Reflecting on this experience during a video interview from the house now shared with their partner, Duffy remarked that it was one of the first times they felt secure in a relationship. They joked that it took a psychiatrist to help them find that sense of trust.
Inspired by this turning point, Duffy composed 'Dead Rat,' a poignant love song that captures the vulnerability of asking for and receiving support. This track anchors 'Blue Reminder,' released Friday, an intimate and emotionally rich album that represents the culmination of years of dedicated musical craft. Whereas previous works explored themes like betrayal, infidelity, and longing for the unattainable, this album documents a stable and enduring romance unfolding in real time.
The record also reflects Duffy’s journey of self-acceptance as a nonbinary individual. Changes in their voice due to testosterone therapy have allowed them to create and perform songs that feel more physically connected and authentic as their vocal range deepened.
