This fall, Coyoacán in Mexico City will welcome Museo Casa Kahlo, a new institution devoted to celebrating the life and artistic journey of Frida Kahlo, as announced by members of the Kahlo family.
The museum will be housed in Casa Roja, a privately owned residence originally purchased by Frida Kahlo’s parents and subsequently passed down to Frida and her sisters. The property was ultimately donated to the museum by Mara Romeo Kahlo, the artist’s grandniece and closest living heir.
Mara Romeo Kahlo shared in an interview that while Frida is widely known for her art, the museum’s purpose is to highlight the woman behind the paintings. She noted that family played a crucial role in Frida’s life, providing essential support throughout her career.
