Ultimately, it was President Trump’s focus on personal diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, coupled with his use of flattery, that enabled Lee to navigate their first bilateral discussion smoothly.
Both leaders commended each other’s willingness to pursue diplomatic engagement with Kim Jong-un, regardless of the uncertain likelihood that the North Korean leader would agree to meet with either of them.
Monday’s White House meeting ended without any major agreements, but it also avoided any significant disagreements between the two sides.
According to Park Won-gon, a political scientist at Ewha Womans University, as long as President Trump refrained from publicly criticizing South Korea or President Lee, the talks would be viewed positively in Seoul.
The day began tensely for President Lee and his delegation after Trump posted a provocative message on social media hours before their meeting, questioning the political situation in South Korea and warning of potential disruptions to business.
