This autumn, a new museum dedicated to the life and work of renowned artist Frida Kahlo will open its doors in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City, according to family members.
The Casa Kahlo Museum will be housed in Casa Roja, a private residence purchased by Frida Kahlo’s parents and passed down to Frida and her sisters. Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida’s great-niece and closest living relative, ultimately entrusted the property to become the museum.
“Everyone recognizes Frida the artist,” Mara Romeo Kahlo shared in a recent interview, “but not the human being, my aunt. Family was a cornerstone of support for Frida.”
Casa Roja was once home to Frida’s sister Cristina, then to Cristina’s daughter Isolda, and subsequently to Mara Romeo. It is located adjacent to the famed Casa Azul, the family home built by Kahlo’s father, Guillermo, which is part of the Frida Kahlo Museum complex administered by a trust managed by the Bank of Mexico.
While the Blue House explores the artist’s life alongside her husband Diego Rivera, the new museum will focus on Kahlo’s origins, beginning with her father’s photographic career, which played a significant role in shaping her artistic path.
Adán García Fajardo, currently the academic director of Mexico City's Museum of Memory and Tolerance, has been appointed as the director of the Casa Kahlo Museum.
The museum’s establishment is supported by the recently founded, New York-based Kahlo Foundation, a nonprofit organization created by the family to safeguard Frida Kahlo’s legacy and promote Mexican, Indigenous, and Latin American art and culture.
The foundation will oversee the museum’s development, opening, and management, as well as initiatives highlighting Kahlo’s artistic legacy and values. Led by Rick Miramontez, a seasoned New York public relations professional known for his work with Broadway productions, the foundation plans to introduce the Kahlo Art Prize, a biennial award recognizing visionary contemporary artists, along with Las Ayudas, a grant program.
“As a Mexican-American, I feel a deep connection,” Miramontez said in a phone interview. “Meeting the family and learning about their goals made me realize this was a unique opportunity to contribute.”
