"Everyone needs a significant setback in life, and 2024 certainly provided that for me."
Rob Madge shared this reflection during a recent video conversation from their London residence. Identifying as nonbinary, the theater artist appeared cheerful and relaxed, dressed in a neatly buttoned white guayabera-style shirt, exuding a casual yet composed demeanor.
However, their remarks were far from lighthearted social plans. Instead, Madge was recounting the disappointment of postponed Broadway aspirations.
Earlier this year, the Broadway debut of Madge’s autobiographical solo show, "My Son’s a Queer (but What Can You Do?)", was abruptly postponed just weeks before previews were to begin at the Lyceum Theater. Although there were discussions about rescheduling for a later season, those plans did not come to fruition.
The production’s producers cited the difficult decision to cancel the Broadway run, stating that the financial and logistical risks threatened the show’s sustainability and overall longevity.
At 28 years old, Madge revealed that the setback prompted them to confront challenging questions common to theater artists striving to bring personal work to the stage.
