‘S.N.L.’ Toasts Mothers and Takes Aim at Trump Appointees
Cecily Strong, portraying Jeanine Pirro, a recent Trump appointee, sprays wine on Colin Jost, who plays Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, during the opening sketch of Saturday Night Live.

Celebrating the election of a new pope, the sketch incorporated sacramental wine for a humorous touch.

Cecily Strong made a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live, reprising her role as Fox News personality Jeanine Pirro and unexpectedly splashing Colin Jost, her former Weekend Update co-host, with wine directly from her mouth.

The opening sketch of the latest S.N.L. episode, hosted by Walton Goggins with musical guest Arcade Fire, unfolded in an unexpected direction.

It began as a seemingly traditional Mother’s Day tribute, featuring cast members Kenan Thompson, Bowen Yang, and Marcello Hernández serenading their real-life mothers who joined them onstage.

However, this was only a setup for James Austin Johnson’s entrance as President Trump, who launched into a free-association monologue about the week’s headlines.

Johnson referenced the Roman Catholic Church’s appointment of Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, noting the new pope’s Chicago roots.
