During a meeting in the Oval Office, former President Trump presented a map of Ukraine highlighting the extensive area Russia has claimed in the eastern Donbas region. The red-shaded territory symbolized land lost, underscoring his message that Ukraine must negotiate to secure peace or risk further territorial losses.
President Volodymyr Zelensky approached the same map with a deeper perspective at a summit with President Trump and European leaders. For him, this was not a matter of simple negotiation or strategy—it was deeply personal.
In a private conversation, Zelensky shared that his grandfather fought during World War II to liberate the Donbas cities from Nazi occupation, making the idea of relinquishing the region unthinkable.
Upon his return to Kyiv, Zelensky reaffirmed this sentiment, emphasizing the profound historical and emotional significance the Donbas holds for many Ukrainian families.
"Countless families have sacrificed greatly in the effort to free the Donbas," Zelensky told reporters. "Many have fallen or been wounded. This is a deeply painful chapter in our nation's history and daily life, far more complex than it may seem to outsiders."
The outcome of the recent diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II remains uncertain. However, the Donbas—a resource-rich area encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk—will undeniably be central to any future peace agreement.
Covering an area nearly the size of West Virginia, the Donbas has been the primary battleground throughout this conflict. Tens of thousands of soldiers from both sides have perished over minimal territorial advances. Currently, Russian forces are attempting to capture the final 2,500 square miles still held by Ukraine in this region.
