Germany's Chancellor Builds Rapport with Trump in Oval Office Meeting
Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Trump share a cordial moment during their Oval Office meeting.

During a Thursday meeting in the Oval Office, President Trump sought to dismiss perceptions that he maintained close ties with Russia.

Addressing reporters, he stated, "I'm not friends with anybody," before smiling and gesturing toward Chancellor Friedrich Merz, seated beside him.

"I'm friends with you," Trump remarked directly to Merz.

Merz responded with a light laugh, signaling his success in navigating the unpredictable temperament of the American president, who has previously criticized other world leaders and expressed clear disfavor toward German leadership, despite his German heritage.

From the outset, the two displayed a friendly rapport. Merz's profile aligns with other leaders whom Trump has praised during official visits, including their shared backgrounds in business, strong English proficiency, and commanding presence.

As a gesture, Merz presented Trump with a framed copy of the German birth certificate of Trump's grandfather, a gift the president described as "fantastic" and said he intended to display prominently. Trump appeared to view Merz as embodying his idealized vision of Germany.

"Welcome to the Oval Office," Trump said. "This office is in great shape. We like to keep things in top condition, just like they do in Germany."
