Israel Takes Decisive Action Against Iranian Nuclear Threat

The full impact of Israel’s recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, initiated early Friday morning, may take months or even years to fully assess. Nonetheless, critics of the operation might consider whether Israel realistically had any other options in the face of an adversary that has repeatedly vowed to eliminate it.

Just a day before the strikes, the International Atomic Energy Agency's board, representing 35 nations, declared that Iran was breaching its nuclear nonproliferation commitments. Their technical report highlighted Iran’s rapid accumulation of highly enriched uranium, failure to provide credible explanations about nuclear materials at multiple sites, and its insistence on a unilateral approach to obligations that are legally binding.

In straightforward terms, Iran has been misleading the international community for years while amassing the capability to produce several nuclear weapons. Ideally, diplomatic channels would have prevented the necessity for Israeli military intervention.

Previous attempts at negotiation, including those under the Trump administration, failed to produce an agreement, with Tehran reportedly becoming more intransigent during talks. Similarly, the subsequent administration invested years in negotiations but ultimately abandoned efforts due to Iran’s continued evasions.

Israel’s prior covert operations—including sabotage and targeted assassinations—that delayed Iran’s nuclear progress appear to have reached their limits. Had these tactics remained effective, Israel likely would have continued relying on them rather than risking retaliation through missile and drone strikes capable of overwhelming its defenses.

Such retaliatory attacks remain a possibility. From Israel’s perspective, preventing Iran from equipping missiles with nuclear warheads is essential. While some analysts argue that a nuclear-armed Iran might establish a strategic balance with Israel, the risks involved underscore the urgency behind Israel’s actions.
