Community Gathers in Mourning for Fallen Officer Didarul Islam
New York Police Department officers stand solemnly as the body of Officer Didarul Islam is transported from a Manhattan hospital early Tuesday morning following a fatal shooting in Midtown.

On a quiet street in the Bronx, family members, friends, and leaders from the local Muslim community gathered Tuesday evening to honor Didarul Islam shortly after news of his death spread.

Officer Islam, 36, served the New York City Police Department for three and a half years. An immigrant from Bangladesh, he was a devoted father of two children, with a third child on the way.

He was fatally shot Monday during a mass shooting at a Park Avenue high-rise where he was assigned to provide security. Authorities reported that the gunman, who had traveled from Las Vegas, opened fire in the building’s lobby and surrounding areas, killing four victims before taking his own life. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
