Succès Masra, a key opposition figure and former prime minister in Chad, was taken into custody early Friday, intensifying concerns about a renewed government crackdown on political dissent in the country.

Authorities have charged Masra with inciting hatred and rebellion, complicity in murder, and desecration of graves, linking him to recent communal violence that resulted in the deaths of numerous women and children, according to Chad’s prosecutor, Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye.

Chad’s civil society and political activists have endured imprisonment, torture, intimidation, and even death at the hands of security forces. Masra, leader of the Transformers party and the nation’s most recognizable opposition voice, is widely seen by his supporters as a victim of this ongoing suppression, sparking a wave of social media calls for his release.

One supporter, Robine Zita, posted on Facebook demanding Masra’s immediate and unconditional freedom.

Another supporter, Sabine Denehybe, urged members of the Transformers party to mobilize for their leader’s swift release.

The arrest of opposition leaders is part of a broader trend across parts of Africa, where political dissent faces increasing repression. For instance, Mali’s military junta recently dissolved all political parties, and the country detained a prominent critic of its military rulers. Similarly, Ivory Coast barred its main opposition leader from running for president due to citizenship issues, despite his renunciation of foreign nationality.

In Chad, Masra was reportedly seized at his home at 5 a.m. by uniformed military personnel. The Transformers’ secretary general described the detention as an "abduction" since no official summons was presented. The party later confirmed that Masra’s legal team and leadership had been granted access to him, urging supporters to remain calm and await further guidance.
