Chinese internet users are actively trolling the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
A former YouTuber known for parody music videos about Chinese leader Xi Jinping created “The MAGA Song,” a satirical take on Trump’s vision for America.
A nationalist TikTok creator who defends China’s policies in Xinjiang produced a video mocking Vice President JD Vance’s alleged use of eyeliner while dressed in drag, simultaneously demanding an apology for Vance’s remarks about “Chinese peasants.”
On the Chinese social media platform RedNote, a video shows Trump admiring a portrait of himself at the Department of Justice, set to a North Korean song titled “The Whole World Envies Us,” which draws a comparison between Trump and the dictator Kim Il-sung.
Despite their differing political viewpoints, Chinese netizens share a common disdain for Trump’s government, producing an impressive collection of AI-generated images, videos, and music that ridicule American leaders for what they perceive as absurd and scandalous policies and statements.
This wave of online trolling reflects shifting Chinese perceptions of the United States. The Trump administration has provided ample material for Communist Party propagandists, making it easier for Beijing to claim moral superiority. Meanwhile, more liberal-minded Chinese, after overcoming initial shock at actions reminiscent of their own authoritarian government, are channeling their creativity into satirizing Washington.
“I love the United States, but Trump has damaged American democracy and freedom, and harmed the country's image on the global stage,” the creator of “The MAGA Song” said in a text message.
