Israeli military officials confirmed Wednesday that operations to take control of Gaza City are underway, even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considers a cease-fire proposal from Hamas that could provoke opposition within his government but might facilitate the release of hostages.
Forces have reportedly reached the outskirts of Gaza City, while preparations are being made in southern Gaza with the setup of tents for civilians expected to be displaced once the offensive begins, according to a military official speaking on condition of anonymity due to protocol.
Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the approval of mobilizing additional reservists and extending the service period for others involved in the Gaza conflict. He urged troops to employ all available resources to defeat the enemy and safeguard soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces.
The operation seeks to disrupt Hamas’s ability to regroup and orchestrate future attacks, marking a continuation of Israel’s nearly two-year campaign against the group, which has devastated much of the Gaza Strip and pushed its population toward severe humanitarian crisis.
An extra 50,000 reservists are expected to be called up in September, raising the total number to 120,000, to replace frontline soldiers entering Gaza City. Current reservists on active duty may also see extensions to their deployment, the official added.
A subsequent military statement confirmed that 60,000 new reservists will be summoned, alongside 20,000 reservists having their service orders extended to support the ongoing military efforts.
