Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis journeyed extensively by air, sea, on foot, and even in the electric Popemobile, reaching dozens of countries across all five continents.
His inaugural official trip outside Rome took place in 2013 to Lampedusa, a small Mediterranean island that had become a gateway for migrants. Shortly after, he traveled to the Bolivian highlands and toured the streets of Philadelphia and New York. He visited Mosul, a war-torn Iraqi city, engaged with crowds in South Sudan—the world’s youngest nation—and crossed Asia and the Pacific, making stops in Mongolia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
As his health declined in the months preceding his passing, his movements became increasingly confined to a small radius centered on his modest residence within a Vatican guesthouse. Following his death on April 21, Vatican authorities prepared his body for a final journey: a funeral procession to the church where he will be interred as the 266th pope.
