Confusion erupted online almost immediately after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah on Wednesday.

False claims quickly circulated, with some individuals wrongly identifying the shooter as a 77-year-old Canadian man who was actually in Toronto, nearly 1,900 miles away, at the time. Others shared images of a transgender woman, incorrectly asserting she was responsible. Numerous posts alleged that only a right-wing marksman could have executed such a long-distance shot, despite a lack of evidence regarding the shooter’s motives or methods. Theories ranged widely, suggesting the perpetrator was either liberal or a foreign agent targeting Kirk.

This cycle of misinformation persisted unchecked.

Kirk’s death quickly became enmeshed in a complex mix of deliberate fabrications, genuine errors, and speculative guesses—an increasingly common pattern following tragic events. This cascade of inaccuracies has become a troubling accompaniment to American tragedies, often fueling conspiracy theories and sometimes inciting further violence.

Many commentators online are adept at framing significant incidents within longstanding political narratives they promote. Following the shooting, several right-wing figures sought to portray Kirk’s killing as evidence that left-leaning Americans are not only misguided but inherently violent, all before any official motive was disclosed.

Jared Holt, a researcher specializing in influence operations, noted that conservative audiences are often told that the political left is radical and violent, and that they pose a direct threat. "When incidents like this occur, those narratives quickly resurface," he said. "The actual facts often become secondary to the prevailing storylines."

Some social media influencers asserted that the shooter held left-wing beliefs. One prominent right-wing figure went further, describing the shooter as "an ideological foot soldier of far-left billionaires." Videos circulated showing police detaining an older white man at the scene, although authorities clarified within hours that he was not the suspect.
