Nearly seven months after the 2024 presidential campaign concluded in defeat, Tim Walz is actively seeking to address the factors he believes led to the loss.
Walz has made a point of visiting Republican-leaning regions where Democrats experienced setbacks, participating in numerous interviews following limited media opportunities during the campaign. While many within his party avoid direct accountability amid post-election discussions, Walz has been forthright in acknowledging personal and collective missteps.
“I understand my responsibilities and I didn’t fulfill them,” stated Walz, the Minnesota governor, during a recent podcast hosted by former Senator Jon Tester of Montana.
His efforts to confront and explain the campaign’s shortcomings drew significant attention over the weekend when he spoke at Democratic conventions in both South Carolina and California.
Addressing the crowd in Columbia, South Carolina, Walz acknowledged skepticism from some attendees, saying, “I know some of you think I’m the last person who should be lecturing about losing. But none of us can shy away from tough questions or the necessary work to ensure future victories.”
Walz’s proactive stance contrasts with the more reserved public approach of his former running mate, who has maintained a lower profile since the election, engaging in select appearances and limited speeches. In California, where she is considering a gubernatorial bid, it was Walz who captured the spotlight at the state’s Democratic convention.
