Although Congress is constitutionally designed as an equal branch of government tasked with lawmaking, budgeting, and declaring war, many Trump supporters see its role primarily as endorsing the former president’s initiatives without opposition.
Two recent focus groups featuring older Trump voters nationwide found a consistent pattern: participants applauded Republican lawmakers who demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the former president while expressing strong disapproval of those who challenged his leadership.
These voters voiced similar criticism toward both the hard-right House Freedom Caucus members and moderate Republican senators they labeled as "Republicans in Name Only" (RINOs), such as Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine.
Their harshest condemnation was reserved for Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, a longtime conservative figure, whom they characterized as an obstacle to Trump’s agenda, describing him as duplicitous and lacking resolve.
This perspective sharply contrasts with the hostile receptions some Republican lawmakers have faced at public town halls recently, where constituents have challenged and booed them over their support for Trump’s positions on tariffs, immigration, and the comprehensive domestic policy legislation passed by the House last week.
