On Wednesday, former President Trump announced plans to impose higher tariffs on Brazil, coinciding with accusations from U.S. officials that Brazilian authorities have unjustly charged his ally, ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, with attempting a coup.

Earlier that week, Trump posted online, describing the criminal allegations against Bolsonaro as "nothing more than a political attack—something I am well acquainted with!" He emphatically called for Bolsonaro to be left alone.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded swiftly, criticizing Trump's social media threats as "very wrong and irresponsible." He emphasized to reporters that "respect is essential," and remarked that "the world has changed; we do not want an emperor."

Later on Wednesday, Trump reiterated to the press that new tariffs targeting Brazil would soon be implemented, citing unfair treatment. "Brazil has not treated us well—far from it," he said, indicating that the tariff announcement would come later that day or the following one.

This sudden diplomatic rift between the two largest countries in the Western Hemisphere highlights how personal disputes can shape foreign policy decisions.

Trump further explained that the forthcoming tariffs on several countries are "based on common sense, deficits, and the way we have been treated over time."
