Forecasters issued urgent warnings as Hurricane Erin intensified over the Atlantic Ocean, nearing Category 3 strength. The storm was described as a major generator of strong winds and high waves.
Despite having almost no chance of making landfall, the hurricane attracted significant attention.
At the Lucky 12 Tavern in Nags Head, North Carolina, the Weather Channel broadcast warnings about the "large and dangerous hurricane." Tomas Houser, 29, mentioned that his parents in Virginia kept texting him throughout the week, eager for updates.
He reassured them that there was no cause for concern.
As the first named storm of the season to reach hurricane status, Erin’s presence stirred unease among many, Houser noted.
He observed that while the Outer Banks community lies hundreds of miles from Erin’s path, residents were more affected by the anxiety surrounding the storm than by its actual impact.
