For nearly sixty years, NASA scientists working at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies have contributed significantly to understanding Earth's climate and planetary atmospheres from their offices above a famous New York City diner.
However, these researchers are now facing displacement as they have been ordered to vacate Armstrong Hall, a building owned by Columbia University located at Broadway and West 112th Street, by the end of May.
The building is widely recognized as the site of Tom’s Restaurant, immortalized in the television series “Seinfeld” and famously referenced in Suzanne Vega’s 1980s song, “Tom’s Diner.”
This forced relocation is part of a broader federal cost-cutting initiative. Yet, despite the intent to reduce expenses, the move is unlikely to generate actual savings.
Although NASA has announced the termination of its lease, the agreement remains legally binding because it is held between Columbia University and a separate federal agency. Consequently, the annual rent of $3 million is still payable regardless of occupancy, according to an informed Columbia official speaking anonymously about internal affairs. This situation results in disruption without financial relief for taxpayers, at least in the near term.
