Powerful wildfires raging near Jerusalem have led to the closure of key roadways and the evacuation of multiple towns as firefighters confront some of the most intense blazes witnessed in recent years.

These fires disrupted Israel’s solemn memorial day dedicated to honoring fallen soldiers, one of the nation’s most significant observances. Broadcasts of commemorative ceremonies at military cemeteries were replaced by scenes of residents evacuating on foot along a major highway.

Due to the escalating fires and adverse weather conditions, including strong winds, many events planned for Israel’s upcoming Independence Day were canceled. Authorities have yet to determine the precise cause of the wildfires.
