When renting a vehicle, even minor dings and scratches are unlikely to go unnoticed. Cutting-edge AI-driven systems are enabling companies like Hertz to detect every small imperfection, often resulting in unexpected charges for renters.
Hertz introduced this technology last autumn at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and has since expanded its use to five additional U.S. airports, according to a company spokesperson. Developed by UVeye, the system captures thousands of high-resolution images from multiple angles as vehicles pass through entry and exit points in rental lots. The AI then analyzes these images to identify any differences or damage.
Damage reports are generated automatically and sent to customers. A human representative only reviews the report if a renter disputes the charges after receiving their bill. The company noted that under 3 percent of vehicles scanned reveal billable damage.
Despite this low percentage, many renters are surprised by charges for damage that is barely visible to the naked eye, prompting questions about the new technology's impact.
For instance, Kelly Rogers and her husband rented a minivan from Hertz at the Atlanta airport during the July 4 weekend to attend a family wedding in Birmingham, Alabama. Residents of Scarsdale, New York, they reported a smooth trip with no incidents during their drive to and from the event.
