OpenAI Transforms into Public Benefit Corporation, Retains Nonprofit Oversight
OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters. The decision for the nonprofit controlling the company to maintain authority marks a significant outcome for its critics.

On Monday, OpenAI announced its transition to a public benefit corporation, enabling the nonprofit entity that governs it to maintain control over the organization.

This nonprofit will continue to serve as OpenAI’s principal shareholder.

Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, founded the artificial intelligence enterprise alongside other Silicon Valley figures, including Elon Musk, as a nonprofit in late 2015. Following Musk’s departure in 2018 due to internal disagreements, Altman restructured OpenAI by linking it to a for-profit entity to secure the substantial funding necessary for advancing AI technology.
