In 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Antonio Delgado as her lieutenant governor, praising him as a highly capable and hardworking political figure.
At the time, Delgado was recognized as a rising Black political leader representing a competitive congressional district. Hochul highlighted his reputation as a seasoned campaigner and his talent for bringing diverse communities together to advance the administration's objectives.
However, their alliance has since deteriorated significantly. Following months of public political discord, Delgado declared on Monday that he will oppose Hochul in the Democratic primary scheduled for next year.
Delgado emphasized the urgency for stronger leadership in New York, stating, "The people are struggling, and the state deserves leadership that is bold, decisive, and transformational."
This call for decisive governance has become the cornerstone of Delgado's campaign, marking the first formal primary challenge to the incumbent governor.
In his campaign announcement video, Delgado refrains from naming the governor directly but stresses that New Yorkers need a leader committed to addressing critical issues such as housing affordability, child care, and health care costs.
