Wayne Lewis, the charismatic singer and keyboardist who co-founded the influential 1980s R&B band Atlantic Starr, passed away on June 5 in Queens at the age of 68.
His brother Jonathan Lewis confirmed the news of his passing but did not disclose the cause. Reports indicate that Wayne Lewis collapsed while exercising on a treadmill at a gym and was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Known for his stylish presence and sharp wit, Lewis was a key vocalist and songwriter for Atlantic Starr. The group achieved major success with their 1987 ballad “Always,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Their repertoire also included notable hits such as “Secret Lovers” and “Circles.” The band earned nominations for three Soul Train Awards and an American Music Award.
Collaborating closely with his brothers Jonathan and David, Lewis crafted heartfelt lyrics that explored themes of love, desire, and heartbreak, set to rich and emotive musical arrangements. His 1980 performance of the soulful ballad “Send for Me” became a signature piece.
In addition to his musical talents, Lewis had a keen eye for fashion, carefully coordinating the group’s wardrobe. Jonathan Lewis recalled that Wayne’s own bold, textured suits often became highlights of their performances.
A 1982 concert review highlighted the band’s blend of romantic pop sensibilities and charismatic appeal, comparing Wayne and David Lewis’s stage presence to that of iconic acts like the Jacksons.
