Dust accumulation attracts moths and can even damage delicate fabrics like silk. Experts recommend vacuuming closets regularly, paying close attention to floorboards and corners where moth eggs often hide. To reduce the risk further, avoid carpeting in closets since it can harbor pests. When relocating, it’s advisable to have closets treated by a pest control professional before unpacking to prevent infestations from developing unnoticed.

Even minor food stains, such as a small drip of ice cream, can provide nourishment for moths. Additionally, pheromones present in sweat, often undetectable by scent, attract these insects. After washing garments, ensure they are thoroughly dried before storing to prevent moisture-related stains and fabric distortion, which also lure moths. For vintage clothing, dry cleaning is recommended to eliminate any hidden pests before storage.

Fibers like wool and silk are vulnerable to stretching when hung for extended periods. Instead, fold these garments loosely, inserting acid-free tissue paper between folds to prevent deep creases. Even when garments are stored in ideal conditions, it’s important to periodically remove, refold, and restack them—doing so approximately once a month helps maintain their shape and prevents damage.
